Kia and The Ocean Cleanup partner for sustainable mobility

Kia Corporation and The Ocean Cleanup have formally commenced a seven-year cooperation.

The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organisation based in the Netherlands. It develops and scales technologies to rid the oceans of plastic by stemming the inflow via rivers, as well as by cleaning up what has already accumulated.

Through the partnership, Kia will provide funds and in-kind support for ocean operation and for the construction of river-cleaning devices. Kia also intends to integrate ocean plastic harvested by The Ocean Cleanup into its value chain, including vehicle manufacturing.

The Ocean Cleanup will also supply usable fractions of the collected plastic and share the organisation's research results and relevant data on reducing plastic pollution with Kia.

This partnership is one of the key strategies in Kia’s vision to build a sustainable future for mobility. Kia plans to increase the share of recycled plastic in its vehicles to 20 per cent by 2030. One of the first examples of this approach is the all-new Kia Niro, which uses sustainable materials developed from recycled wallpaper, eucalyptus leaves, and water-based paint to minimise the impact on the environment.
