Electric car battery cover: Why you need an EV warranty

An EV battery is often recognised as the defining component of an electric car. It's crucial to the operation of electric vehicles and is responsible for supplying the motor with energy.

EV batteries are expensive components due to the complexity involved in their production. Manufacturers use advanced materials like lithium, cobalt and nickel, which contribute to their high costs. In some cases, a replacement electric car battery can cost several thousand pounds - a significant expense for drivers without proper warranty cover.

At Kia, we aim to maximise the financial benefits of EV driving by ensuring your battery is fully covered for up to 8 years/100,000 miles.

Let’s explore why having an electric car battery warranty is so important and how it can help you get the most out of your EV.

How long do electric car batteries last?

EV batteries are manufactured to outlast the cars they power. Most electric car batteries generally have a lifespan of upwards of 10 years (or 100,000 miles) with the length of a hybrid car battery tending to be about the same.

Electric car batteries are among the key components, alongside the electric motor, which enables cleaner driving for electric cars. The job of an EV battery is to store energy and deliver it to the electric motor to power the vehicle in the absence of a combustion engine.

EV batteries work based on their range – the distance the car can travel before the battery runs out of charge. When (or, ideally, before) this happens, they require recharging. Pure EVs and PHEVs use plug-in charging, whereas hybrid cars can recharge themselves either as you drive using the combustion engine or through regenerative braking.

If the battery does not function at its full capacity, its range will start to decrease, requiring the driver to recharge it more frequently. Without a car warranty, EV batteries are very expensive to repair or replace, so having battery coverage for long enough to cover most of a battery’s lifespan is imperative. The cost of replacing the battery in an EV can become a major concern if you're unprepared.

Battery warranty on electric cars

All EV manufacturers offer warranty coverage on their electric car batteries. However, these policies can differ significantly.

Some manufacturers offer warranties that only cover your battery in the event of complete failure. This means that your fees are only covered if the battery is completely broken. If the battery operates at reduced capacity or is only slightly compromised, you will still be liable to pay for repairs or replacements.

Kia offers a battery warranty that operates on a specified performance threshold. If the car battery capacity or performance drops below this threshold, the warranty will cover the necessary repairs or replacements.

In addition to the 7-year/100,000 miles warranty, Kia provides an 8-year battery pack/100,000 miles warranty with a threshold of 70%. Therefore, Kia will cover any repairs or replacements if your electric car battery drops below 70% capacity within 8 years from the date of purchase. Our car battery warranty is also transferable, so you can benefit from a higher resale value when it comes to selling your Kia.

The best EV warranty packages are those that include comprehensive coverage of your EV battery, rather than just for a complete failure, such as the electric car battery warranty provided by Kia. Securing this kind of EV coverage will ensure that you don’t have to live with suboptimal performance and efficiency caused by a largely faulty battery – or fund the repairs for it out of your own pocket.
