A saloon car also has a 'three-box design', which means the engine, passenger and driver compartment, and boot are located in three separate boxes. A hatchback has a two-box design, with the engine in one box and the passenger/driver compartment and boot in the other.

This design gives saloon cars a larger boot space. Hatchbacks are often more compact and economical, which makes them a popular option for city driving.
