Kia eCall and emergency assistance
-
eCall is an emergency response system that can automatically contact emergency services if your vehicle is involved in a serious accident. You can also use the SOS button inside your vehicle to contact emergency services manually, where the required mobile network is available.
Across Europe, some mobile network operators have already switched off older 2G and/or 3G networks, while others are phasing them out at different times. On this page, you'll find out what that means for eCall, how Kia is introducing Next Generation eCall (NG eCall) in newly produced vehicles on a model-by-model basis, and where you can go for more information and support.
-
Here’s what you need to know
If your Kia is equipped with eCall, it can automatically contact emergency services after a serious accident, where the required mobile network is available.
As older 2G and 3G mobile networks are phased out in some countries, legacy eCall services may no longer be available where those networks have been switched off. These network changes are made by mobile network operators and are outside Kia's control.
Kia Connect services use 4G and newer network technologies and are not affected by the legacy eCall network transition.

Which eCall system does my Kia use?
The eCall system fitted to your vehicle may vary by model year, specification, production date and market. If you are unsure which system your vehicle uses, your local Kia dealer or Kia Customer Care team can help.

How eCall helps in times of need
eCall is an emergency call system fitted to many vehicles. If your vehicle is involved in a serious accident, eCall can automatically contact emergency services and share important information to help them respond as quickly as possible.
This may include your vehicle's location and other essential information that helps emergency services find you quickly, especially if you or your passengers are unable to call for help.
- Automatically contacts emergency services after a serious accident
- Can also be activated manually using the SOS button
- Shares important information, including your vehicle's location
- Requires a compatible mobile network to work
-
How eCall works
When eCall is activated, your vehicle automatically connects with emergency services and shares key information to help them respond quickly.
Step one: After a serious accident is detected, the vehicle automatically triggers an emergency call.
Step two: Your vehicle connects to emergency services through the available mobile network.
Step three: Vital information, such as the vehicle's location, is shared with emergency services to help them find your vehicle and assess the situation.
You can also contact emergency services manually by pressing the SOS button, for example if you experience a medical emergency or another urgent situation.
-
Two ways to contact emergency services
Automatic eCall
Automatic eCall activates after a serious accident and can contact emergency services even if nobody inside the vehicle is able to make the call.
Manual eCall
Press the SOS button to start a manual eCall if you need urgent help and the automatic system hasn't been triggered.
Both automatic and manual eCall services depend on the availability of the mobile network used by the vehicle's eCall system.
-
Information shared during an eCall
When eCall is activated, it can share essential information with emergency services to help them respond more quickly. This may include your vehicle's location and crash-related information.
This information helps emergency services find your vehicle and better understand the situation. eCall is only used for emergency response and operates separately from Kia Connect services.
- eCall helps emergency services locate your vehicle.
- The information is used to support emergency response.
- eCall and Kia Connect are separate services.
-
Why mobile networks are changing
Many current eCall systems use 2G and/or 3G mobile networks. Across Europe, mobile network operators are replacing these networks with newer technologies.
As this happens, legacy eCall systems that rely on those older networks may no longer work in some locations.
The timing of these changes varies by country and mobile network operator and is outside Kia's control. Kia is gradually rolling out NG eCall across newly produced vehicles, model by model. Availability depends on the vehicle model, specification and production date.
- 2G and 3G networks have already been switched off in some markets and are being phased out in others.
- Some eCall systems rely on 2G and/or 3G networks.
- Network phase-out timing differs from country to country.
- eCall availability may be affected where the required network is no longer available.
-
Next Generation eCall
NG eCall, or Next Generation eCall, is an advanced emergency call system designed to use newer 4G or 5G mobile networks.
NG eCall supports faster and more reliable emergency communication compared with legacy eCall systems. Kia is introducing NG eCall in newly produced vehicles on a model-by-model basis. Availability depends on the model, specification and production date.
- NG eCall uses 4G or 5G networks.
- It’s designed to meet updated European emergency call requirements.
- It supports the transition away from 2G and 3G networks.
- Kia is introducing this technology in newly produced vehicles on a model-by-model basis.
-
Will Kia Connect be affected?
No. Kia Connect app and connected services use 4G and newer network technologies. The transition from legacy eCall systems does not affect Kia Connect services.
This means Kia Connect services are separate from the legacy eCall network transition described on this page.
-
What this means for you
Kia understands how important emergency call services are. As mobile networks and eCall technology continue to evolve, we'll continue to keep customers informed.
For vehicles equipped with legacy eCall, availability may depend on whether the required 2G and/or 3G network remains available in the country or region where the vehicle is being used.
Due to the operational complexity involved, Kia does not offer a retrofit from legacy eCall to NG eCall for existing vehicles. The maintenance schedule for the eCall module battery remains the same.
- Continue to follow the maintenance schedule for your vehicle.
- Contact your Kia dealer or Kia Customer Care if you have questions about your vehicle.
- Check official Kia communications for future updates about eCall.
- In an emergency, always follow local emergency guidance and contact emergency services directly where needed.
