Kia is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2045 through sustainable mobility, renewable energy solutions like EV solar panel integration, and preserving global ecosystems.
Our vision is to drive innovation for a greener future.
Sustainability in Action
Kia’s commitment to sustainability is measurable, impactful,
and future-focused.
-
Achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2045
Kia is on track to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, using renewable energy and sustainable materials across its production facilities. -
Powering Production with Renewables
Over 80% of Kia’s global manufacturing is powered by renewable energy, contributing to a cleaner planet and sustainable mobility solutions. -
Recycling Batteries for a Greener Future
Kia’s recycling initiatives recover up to 90% of valuable materials from EV batteries, reducing waste and supporting a circular economy.
Are electric cars sustainable? Kia's
ongoing commitment to sustainability
At Kia, we believe electric cars offer a greener, more environmentally-friendly alternative to petrol and diesel vehicles. But sustainability goes beyond producing eco-friendly cars—it’s about building a clean energy future from manufacturing to end-of-life.
Kia is committed to reducing the carbon footprint of electric cars through sustainable innovations across every stage of their life cycle, ensuring they are truly better for the environment in the long term.
From renewable energy in production to ev charging solar solutions and recycling, our green transportation initiatives are designed to support a low-carbon, clean-energy future, highlighting the lasting impact and environmental benefits of electric cars.

Sustainable Mobility
Â
We are accelerating toward an all-electric future, with a commitment to offering no fewer than 15 fully electric vehicles in our range by 2027. Leading the charge is the Kia EV9, a groundbreaking electric SUV that embodies our ‘Bold For Nature’ philosophy of sustainable mobility.
Â
The EV9 showcases our dedication to responsible manufacturing, incorporating sustainable innovations like vegan leather and recycled plastics. As part of Kia’s broader sustainability goals, we aim for 20% of all vehicle plastic components to come from recycled materials by 2030, underscoring our commitment to creating a cleaner, greener future.
-
Sustainable Energy
Â
We are taking a holistic approach, with the goal of ensuring our whole operation and recycling is sustainable. All electric energy used at our manufacturing sites will be 100% renewable energy by 2040 and we are collaborating with our many partners and suppliers to drive their carbon emissions down.

Â
We will establish solar energy systems at our manufacturing plants in Korea, China, the United States, and India. Longer term, we are planning to introduce hydrogen as a power source for our manufacturing.

Â
We are intensifying our efforts to guarantee the recycling of our vehicles and EV batteries. Our vehicles observe the Design for Recycling (DIR) guidelines, which means that a vehicle like the EV6 is entirely recyclable. We are also focused on ensuring end-of-life batteries get either recycled or re-used for energy storage.
-
Sustainable Planet
Â
In the UK, we are partners with the Surrey Wildlife Trust to support the conservation of 100 acres of rare chalk grassland in Surrey. We’re helping young people with reserves management training essential for conservation. Kia UK staff are taking part in practical conservation efforts to raise awareness of biodiversity and its importance.

Â
Our Blue Carbon programme looks at protecting and restoring key marine environments. We began efforts to restore the tidal mudflats in our home country of Korea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These mudflats capture 260,000 tons of harmful carbon emissions annually.

Â
We have also struck a long-term partnership with The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organisation that is innovating to prevent waste from reaching oceans and to collect waste already present in oceans. As part of this partnership, we are providing not only funding but also operational support.
The Lifecycle of Kia Batteries
From creation to end-of-life, Kia batteries are designed with sustainability and durability in mind.
-
1. Quality Production
Â
Kia’s batteries are engineered with advanced lithium-ion technology to ensure durability and high performance.
-
2. Long-Lasting Performance
Â
This is a core advantage for EVs, made possible by Kia’s durable, high-performance lithium-ion batteries.
-
3. Disposal and Recycling

Kia Sustainability Reports
Â
Learn how we and our electric cars are shaping the future of green mobility and creating a positive environmental impact
Are electric cars good for the environment? Are electric cars good for the environment?
Â
Â
Yes, electric cars are better for the environment as they produce zero emissions, reducing air pollution and helping to combat climate change. Over their lifetime, especially with renewable energy sources, electric cars have a much smaller carbon footprint compared to petrol or diesel cars.
Are electric cars sustainable? Are electric cars sustainable?
Â
Â
Yes, electric cars are more sustainable in the long run. While production, especially of EV batteries, has some environmental impact, electric cars help to reduce emissions over time. Kia is committed to making its electric vehicles part of a sustainable mobility ecosystem by using renewable energy and recycling materials.
Are EV batteries sustainable? Are EV batteries sustainable?
Â
Â
EV batteries are becoming more sustainable through innovative solutions, like improved recycling and reuse. Kia ensures that end-of-life batteries are repurposed or recycled, reducing waste and supporting green transport solutions.
