That depends on which state you are in. For example, through January 1, 2023 California law allows single-occupant use of High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV or carpool) lanes by qualifying alternative fuel vehicles such as plug-in hybrids and zero-emissions vehicles. Electric utility companies may offer reduced electricity rates during certain hours for electric vehicle owners, lowering the cost of charging your EV at home. Kia EVs have an onboard rechargeable battery that stores energy to power the electric motor. Recharge the battery by plugging your electric vehicle into an outlet at home or a charging station.
There are three ways to charge up:
Level 1 with a 120V charger (plugging into a standard wall outlet).
Level 2 with a 240V charger, which you may be able to install in your home or find at many public stations.

The distance to empty is calculated based on the real-time fuel efficiency while driving. The distance may vary depending on driving conditions (cargo, weather, temperature, road surfaces, vehicle speed/acceleration, hills/elevation, air conditioner/heater use), driving style and battery durability, even if the charge amount is the same. Note that the distance to empty is displayed differently according to the selected drive mode (ECO, normal, sport, ECO+).
The AC and heater consume energy from the high-voltage battery, causing the range to decrease. Turning off the air conditioning or heater when not needed may help manage the high voltage battery and increase your driving range.
Kia EV battery technology was designed with thermal stability in mind. However, inclement weather may generally affect the battery performance. At very low temperatures, it is normal for EVs to have performance reduction because of high-voltage battery output reduction. Very low temperatures also often lead to an increased use of the HVAC system, which may result in a decreased driving range.
Yes, in addition to energy-saving climate control features, Kia EVs come with a variety of ways to help manage driving efficiency. Drive modes like ECO, which is designed to help enhance operating efficiency and ECO+, a super power-saving mode designed to maximize battery energy. A Smart ECO pedal guide offers a live look into how aggressively or efficiently you’re driving. Rounding out range management features is an adjustable regenerative braking system, allowing for recapturing for kinetic energy, to help get the most range out of your EV.
With Kia EVs, braking can recharge your battery when you slow down. Whenever you brake and decelerate, the electric traction motor captures kinetic energy to recharge the battery. For added engagement, steering wheel mounted paddles allow the driver to adjust regenerative breaking levels. You get to decide if you’d like to experience simplified one-pedal driving, or sail down the road to maintain maximum momentum.*
Depending on your driving speed, AC or heater use, weather conditions, driving style and other factors, usually you can drive about 12-18 miles after the warning lamp is on.
'MPGe' stands for 'miles per gallon equivalent,' where one gallon of gasoline equates to 33.7 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity in terms of energy. Formulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it is the standardized way to compare the energy efficiency of plug-in electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles to gas-powered vehicles. EPA numbers, e.g., MPGe and range, are based on data results from testing.
