How hybrid works.

The Optima Hybrid utilizes two systems: an electric traction motor that works in concert with a lithium polymer battery and a 4-cylinder gas engine. The Optima Hybrid will be powered by one or both, depending what type of driving you’re doing.

The Optima Hybrid uses electric power at start-up and during lower-speed driving.

At full acceleration, both the gasoline engine and the electric motor are used.

For freeway driving, the Optima Hybrid relies exclusively on the responsive 4-cylinder 2.4-liter gas engine.

During deceleration, regenerative braking converts kinetic energy to electrical energy to automatically charge the electric motor’s battery.
