How long does an electric car battery last?

“The current prediction is an electric car battery will last 10 to 20 years. Its lifespan can be prolonged by avoiding extreme temperatures, overcharging and over-discharging, and limiting fast charging.”

The current prediction is that an average electric car battery will last from 10 to 20 years before needing replacement. Kia offers a battery capacity warranty of 3 to 10 years/150,000km or 100,000miles, for its electric car lineup and the exact figure can be different depends on the country you live in. Detailed information can be found on the Service page and through a Kia dealership. The number of years or the distance covered by the warranty varies depending on the country.

Lithium-ion polymer batteries in electric vehicles lose some of their capacity in the course of their life, but how long the battery lasts depends on several factors. Keeping them in mind, drivers can extend the battery lifespan in their vehicles.

Tips to keep your vehicle's battery new are:

 1) Avoid leaving your car in extremely hot or cold temperatures for a long time. Extreme temperature can seriously damage the car's battery or reduce the driving range.

 2) Charge your battery between 20% and 80% of the battery capacity, the most efficient range for charging. The battery used in electric cars can last longer when they are not always fully charged, for the heat generated during charging can harm the battery. Likewise, draining the battery too close to being empty should also be avoided.

 3) Minimize the number of fast charging sessions. The number of DC charging sessions should be limited since it causes too many chemical reactions and generates excess heat energy, which eventually weakens the battery's ability to hold a charge.
