Guide to sedans

What is a sedan?

How do we define a sedan car? A sedan is a car body style that generally has four doors for passengers and a separate boot (or trunk in some parts of the world). Another way of thinking about a sedan is that it has three distinct sections or ‘boxes’. One box houses the engine, the second contains the driver and passengers, and the third box at the rear of the vehicle is for luggage.

Because sedans used to be the most common style of car on the road, we tend to not give this body shape much thought. Yet it’s well worth considering more detail about the characteristics, popularity and benefits of sedan cars

There is no single definition of a sedan. Generally that it’s a term that applies only to four-door cars (with two-door versions usually known as a "coupe"). Sedans typically seat up to four passengers in addition to the driver.

Sedans have ample space for luggage, shopping or other belongings in the boot or trunk, an area that’s separate from the seating, although some models come with flat folding rear seats which allow you to place larger items.

The word sedan isn’t used in all countries. While it’s the usual term in Australia, New Zealand and the USA, the word used for the same style of car in the United Kingdom is ‘saloon’. History shows the term "sedan" was first used for a car in the early 1900s in America.

Sedan vs SUV

Although there’s no strict definition of SUV within the car industry, Sports Utility Vehicles tend to have some capacity for off-road driving, more space, higher ground clearance and improved driver visibility within the same footprint as a sedan. This makes them great for outdoor enthusiasts, families and those who need extra cargo space. Many older people also prefer SUVs for ease of getting in and out thanks to its higher ride.

In comparison, sedans tend to be more stable thanks to their relatively low centre of gravity, which can provide a more sporty driving experience and control. They're also typically more fuel efficient, and easier to manoeuvre. Choosing between the two depends on lifestyle and preferences.

Sedan vs hatchback

In comparison to a sedan, which has a completely separate cargo section, hatchbacks have an openness between the passenger area and the boot, offering practicality and space. Sedans often offer a quieter drive and allow you to keep your luggage and other cargo completely separate from your passengers. On the other hand, the shorter length of the hatchback makes it easier to manoeuvre vs sedans in tight spaces. The choice will depend on lifestyle & personal preferences.

Sedan variations

Not all sedans will look the same or offer the same capacity. As a rough guide, sedans can be separated into three sub-categories:

Compact sedan

Sedans with a shorter wheelbase are ideal for those seeking a smaller and more affordable vehicle that’s easier to manoeuvre when parking or in tight, city environments.

Medium sedan

Sedans that aim to meet the needs of those wanting to balance small car efficiency with large car room and comfort.

Large sedan

Sedans with large cabins and boot areas are ideal for passengers who seek a smoother ride and appreciate maximum head and leg room.

Like all car designs, sedans are constantly evolving in terms of their shape, style and performance. New sedans can be sleek, stylish, aerodynamic and sporty.

Modern sedans are available with a variety of petrol and electric power, allowing you to choose the option that suits you and your family best.

Advantages of sedan cars

There are many benefits of choosing a sedan body type, including:

  • - Fuel-efficiency: As well as having a choice of compact options, sedans tend to be lighter and more aerodynamic than similar sized SUVs, resulting in greater fuel efficiency.

  • - Safety: Sedans tend to have a lower centre of gravity so are less likely to roll over and can be easier to manoeuvre when quick action is needed.

  • - Comfort and space:  Sedans are designed with passengers in mind, plus full separation from the cargo area can result in less noise.

What’s new in sedan design?

Kia’s new K4 sedan is so striking in its design that it was awarded the 2024 Good Design Award in the Transportation category. Forget any preconceived ideas you might have about sedans being old-fashioned, the K4 was praised by judges for its design authenticity, daring, vigor and resilience.

Combining innovative design with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) has resulted in a car that not only looks great but is a pleasure to drive. Explore more of the award-winning Kia K4 sedan today.

The whole new levels of peace of mind
At speeds of 20 km/h or higher, BCW alerts you if a vehicle enters your blind spot, even when you are in the process of changing lanes. LED warnings flash on the door mirror and an audio warning is emitted when you signal to make a lane change.
